Migraine vs Healthly Life

Gak tau kenapa, sejak kemarin siang rasanya kepalaku berat banget. Kadang murni sakit kepala, kadang jadi migraine. Biasanya sih sakit seperti ini aku cuekin saja, tetapi kali ini rasanya kok jadi agak parah. Biasanya I just need to lay down, sleep for a while, eat a lot and all will be fine. But not this time. Going to a doctor absolutly an option, but since I usually never able to eat the medicine, I would rather not going (walaupun gak rugi juga karena ada jatah reimbursement dari kantor). Akhirnya I just took a Panadol and get back to browsing and working. Browsing trying to find more about my migrain.

Based on wikipedia, Migraine is a neurological syndrome that can cause a wide range of symptoms during an attack. The most commonly thought of symptom is headache. Hmm, jadi migrain adalah suatu kelainan pada sistem saraf yang merupakan gejala sakit kepala. Ih, serem juga ya kalau udah ngomongin sistem saraf.

Usually migraine causes episodes of severe or moderate headache (which is often one-sided and pulsating) lasting from four to 72 hours. Hmm, let’s count. Kalau aku sudah merasa sakit sejak kemarin siang, jadi sekarang aku sudah mencapai kurang lebih 24 jam. So, masih dalam batas wajar donk, karena belum sampai 72 jam. Eh, tapi mana enak sakit kepala sampai 72 jam gitu.

Three quarters of adult migraine patients are female. This reveals the strong correlation to hormonal cycling and hormonal-related causes or triggers. Jadi ternyata memang cewek sering sekali menderita migrain ini karena adanya dorongan hormon.

Intensity of pain:

  • 0 no pain
  • 1 mild pain ‘does not interfere with usual activities’
  • 2 moderate pain ‘inhibits, but does not wholly prevent usual activities’
  • 3 severe pain ‘prevents all activities’

Kayaknya aku masuk kategori kedua deh – 1 mild pain. Sakit tetapi masih bisa beraktivitas.

Migraine attacks may be triggered by:

  1. Allergic reactions
  2. Bright lights, loud noises, and certain odors or perfumes
  3. Physical or emotional stress
  4. Changes in sleep patterns
  5. Smoking or exposure to smoke
  6. Skipping meals
  7. Dehydration
  8. Alcohol or caffeine
  9. Menstrual cycle fluctuations, birth control pills
  10. Tension headaches
  11. Foods containing tyramine (red wine, aged cheese, smoked fish, chicken livers, figs, and some beans), monosodium glutamate or nitrates (preserved meats)
  12. Other foods such as chocolate, nuts, peanut butter, avocado, banana, citrus, onions, dairy products, and fermented or pickled foods.
  13. Temperature mixed with humidity. High humidity plus high or low temperature was the biggest cause.
  14. Significant changes in weather
  15. Changes in barometric pressure

Alergi kayaknya bukan. Bright light etc, kayaknya juga bukan. Nah yang ketiga neh, amat sangat mungkin. Sleep patterns, hmm apa gara-gara aku kebanyakan tidur weekend kemarin ya. Smoking, absolutly not (kecuali kalau perokok pasif include). Skipping meals, hmm .. bisa jadi sih. Dehydration, bisa juga (akhir-akhir ini aku merasa haus). Alcohol pastinya bukan, tapi caffeine bisa jadi. Menstrual, belum waktunya. Food kayaknya enggak, tapi klo perubahan cuaca kayaknya bisa.
So kesimpulannya dari urutan tersangka paling utama adalah:
1. Physical or emotional stress
2. Significant changes in weather
3. Skipping meals
4. Dehydration
5. Caffeine

Treatment:
1. Paracetamol, at a dose of 1000 mg
2. Riboflavin (also called Vitamin B2) at the high dose of 400 mg daily for three months
3. Vitamin B12, 1 mg of intranasal hydroxocobalamin (a form of Vitamin B12), taken daily for three months

Herbal Treatment:
1. 50 mg or 75 mg/day of butterbur (Petasites hybridus)
2. Cannabis was a standard treatment for migraines from the mid-19th century until it was outlawed in the early 20th century
3. The plant feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium)
4. Kudzu root (Pueraria lobata

Hmm, Cannabis termasuk ya …. I have take the Paracetamol. I hope it will end my migraine.

Patients can attempt to identify and avoid factors that promote or precipitate migraine episodes. Moderation in alcohol and caffeine intake, consistency in sleep habits, and regular meals may be helpful.

Intinya hidup sehat kali ya : kurangi kafein (jangan sering-sering minum kopi), tidur dan makan yang cukup dan teratur.

Behavioral treatments
1. exercise for 15–20 minutes per day
2. Sleep is often a good solution if a migraine is not so severe as to prevent it
3. Diet
4. Sexual activity

Sekali lagi akhirnya diingatkan betapa pentingnya olahraga. I cannot recall when the last time I’m swimming.

So, what is the conclusion. In short, kayaknya aku musti menerapkan pola hidup sehat: makan teratur, tidur cukup, olahraga teratur dan kurangi stress. Well, kelihatannya simple, tapi lumayan butuh komitmen untuk menjalani pola hidup seperti ini. Pilihannya cuma dua : mo migrain terus-terusan atau mau mencoba untuk hidup sehat?
